Objective: To assess the basic knowledge of adolescents in the city of Presidente Prudente (SP) between the sixth and eighth grades about contraceptive methods. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 680 students in the sixth and eighth grades of Presidente Prudente, using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire, taking into account relevant situations regarding basic knowledge related to contraceptive methods. Results: The most cited contraceptive methods were condoms, oral contraceptives and the calendar method. Most believed that oral contraceptives could cause serious side effects. At the same time, many said that condoms were 100% effective against venereal diseases and were equally effective in preventing pregnancy. Many of them were unable to correctly inform their fertile day. Conclusion: The vast majority of adolescents have little information on the subject and receive inadequate guidance, which makes them extremely exposed to unplanned pregnancy.

Objective: To evaluate the basic notions on birth-control methods of the educating adolescents, from the district of Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil, now coursing the sixth and eight grades. Method: A study of transverse cutting was carried out in 680 students in the sixth and eight high grades through a self-administered anonymous questionnaire, taking into account situations of relevance on the basic knowledge related to birth-control methods. Results: The birth-control devices most cited were the condom, the oral contraceptives and the calendar charting. The majority believed that oral conceptions could cause several side effects. At the same time, most said that the condom is 100% effective against venereal disease, being equally effective avoiding pregnancy. Most of them could not correctly inform the fertile day. Conclusion: The great majority of the adolescents have little information about the birth-control methods, as well as an inadequate orientation on them, which makes them excessively exposed to a non-planned pregnancy.
