Violence

Authors: Isabel Bouzas

The first records related to adolescent medicine date back to the end of the 19th century and are publications that describe illnesses among students. At that time, growth and development were the subjects of greatest interest. In the 21st century, with the evolution and transformations of society, other interests have emerged that unfortunately are not always part of the physiological process of human development.

In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in violence in the society in which we live, directly influencing individual behavior, which is no longer a social problem but a public health problem.

Violence, a highly relevant topic, involves multiple factors, from the simple concept of aggressive action that causes harm to the individual’s life to a complex network phenomenon.

Adolescents, in the process of transformation, are easy victims of violence, whether psychological, physical or emotional. In addition, they directly suffer the impact of the country’s socioeconomic situation, which generates situations of family breakdown, abandonment, sexual exploitation, abuse with all its variables, drugs, crime, among others. It is therefore of fundamental importance to deepen and broaden discussions on the causes and consequences of violence in modern society, in search of goals and solutions.

The Center for Studies on Adolescent Health (NESA), which has always sought to innovate, share and present new challenges throughout its history, will hold the 1st National Interdisciplinary Symposium on Adolescent/Young Women and Violence on the campus of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) from November 17 to 19, in partnership with the Special Secretariat for Women’s Policies, together with the 5th NESA Clinical Symposium, where several topics will be addressed, including: Structural Violence, Violence and Gender, Institutional Violence, Sexual Violence, Sexual Activity in Adolescence Today, Contraception, Legal Aspects of the Protection of Adolescent Women, Sexual Exploitation, and Media and Adolescence .

It will be a great opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas. We look forward to your presence.
