Abstract

Background: Nutritional deficiencies during adolescence have emerged as a significant public health concern due to their impact on physical growth, cognitive development, and psychological well-being. Deficiencies in essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, zinc, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to increased risks of mental health disorders among adolescents.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of nutritional deficiencies among adolescents and examine their association with mental health disorders.

Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 adolescents aged 13–18 years. Data were collected using nutritional assessment questionnaires, dietary intake records, laboratory reports, and standardized mental health screening tools. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and logistic regression were employed to analyze the data.

Findings: Results showed that 64% of participants had at least one nutritional deficiency. Iron deficiency was identified in 38% of adolescents, while vitamin D deficiency was observed in 42%. Mental health disorders were reported in 35% of participants. Adolescents with nutritional deficiencies demonstrated a significantly higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms (48%) compared to those with adequate nutritional status (22%; p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Nutritional deficiencies are highly prevalent among adolescents and are significantly associated with increased mental health disorder prevalence. Early nutritional interventions and health promotion programs may improve psychological well-being and reduce mental health risks among adolescents.
