Abstract

Background:
Social media platforms have become an integral part of adolescents’ daily lives, providing opportunities for communication, entertainment, and information sharing. However, excessive social media exposure has been increasingly associated with adverse psychological outcomes, including anxiety, depression, loneliness, sleep disturbances, and reduced self-esteem. Growing concerns have emerged regarding the influence of prolonged online engagement on adolescent mental health and emotional well-being.

Objective:
To evaluate the association between excessive social media exposure patterns and mental health challenges among adolescents.

Methodology:
A retrospective observational study was conducted involving 220 adolescents aged 13–18 years. Data regarding daily social media usage, exposure patterns, sleep habits, and psychological well-being were collected through validated questionnaires and clinical assessments. Statistical analyses were performed to examine relationships between social media exposure and mental health outcomes.

Findings:
The results indicated that 41.8% of adolescents with excessive social media exposure reported symptoms of anxiety, while 36.4% exhibited depressive symptoms. Sleep disturbances were observed in 48.2% of participants, and low self-esteem affected 32.7%. Adolescents spending more than four hours daily on social media demonstrated significantly higher mental health risk scores. The predictive assessment model achieved an overall accuracy of 86.9% in identifying adolescents at risk of psychological difficulties.

Conclusion:
Excessive social media exposure is significantly associated with increased mental health challenges among adolescents. Early monitoring, digital wellness education, and targeted psychological support may help reduce adverse outcomes and promote healthier online engagement.
