Abstract

Background: Maternal stress during pregnancy is becoming increasingly recognized as an important factor in fatal development and in long-term behavioural outcomes in the offspring. Prenatal exposure to psychological stress may affect fatal neuroendocrine regulation, brain maturation and stress response systems, with potential negative behaviour perinatal consequences. Understanding these associations is critical to improving maternal and child health outcomes.

Objective: To investigate the effects of maternal stress during pregnancy on perinatal behaviour development outcomes and identify the major mechanisms underlying infant behaviour and neurodevelopmental changes.

Methodology: We did a comprehensive review of the most recent clinical and epidemiological studies. We reviewed all studies on prenatal stress, maternal psychological health, fatal development, and infant behaviour outcomes to examine the relationship between maternal stress exposure and perinatal development.

Findings: The reviewed evidence indicated that high levels of maternal stress were associated with a 22–35% increase in behaviour dysregulation, a 28% increase in risk for emotional reactivity, and a 20–30% increase in incidence of attention and social interaction difficulties in early infancy. Higher prenatal stress was also linked to differences in cortisol regulation, self-soothing behaviour and cognitive development.

Conclusion: Maternal stress during pregnancy has a significant impact on perinatal behaviour development outcomes. Early detection and treatment of prenatal stress may reduce adverse developmental outcomes and lead to healthier behavioral and neurodevelopmental trajectories in children.
