Abstract

Background: Maternal hypertension comprising chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia is one of the most common causes of adverse perinatal outcomes globally. Hypertensive conditions during the course of pregnancy may compromise placental blood flow, resulting in fetal growth restriction, preterm delivery and impaired neonatal organ development.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among maternal hypertension-related complications during pregnancy and neonatal organ development, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, as well as neurological development.

Methodology: A story review was performed of peer-reviewed studies released among 2020 and 2026 using electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, as well as Web of Science. We reviewed and summarized the relevant literature on maternal hypertension, perinatal issues, as well as neonatal developmental results.

Findings: The review showed that maternal hypertension increased the risk of preterm birth by 32%, fetal growth restriction by 27%, and neonatal respiratory complications by 24%. Investigations also reported delayed renal maturation in about 18% of affected neonates and a 15% increased risk of neurodevelopmental impairment. Poor perfusion of placenta was the main mechanism affecting negative neonatal development outcomes.

Conclusion: Maternal hypertension is an important factor influencing neonatal health, increasing the risk of complications during pregnancy and impaired organ development. Early diagnosis, adequate blood pressure control and comprehensive prenatal evaluations are key to reduce complications and improve infant survival and overall health.
