Abstract

Background: Emergencies involving natural disasters, pandemics, military conflicts, along with humanitarian crises lead to significant disruption of maternal and neonatal health care services resulting in increased risk of morbidity and fatalities in vulnerable populations.

Objective: The present research aims to explore the role of unique interventions in perinatal health care in improving maternal and neonatal health during emergencies.

Methodology: A narrative review of the recent literature published across 2020 and 2023 was performed. Telemedicine, mobile health programs, portable diagnostic devices, emergency medical referral systems and community-based maternal care paradigms were reviewed to assess efficacy in crisis settings.

Findings: The review showed that innovative perinatal health care strategies significantly improved access to health care, continuity of care, and rapid clinical interventions. Antenatal consultation coverage increased by around 35% through telehealth platforms, and mobile emergency referral systems reduced delays in obtaining skilled obstetric care by almost 28%. Interventions led by community health workers reduced preventable neonatal complications by 22%. Together these innovations improved maternal and neonatal outcomes in resource-limited and emergency-affected settings.

Conclusion: Perinatal medical advances play an essential role in protecting both maternal and neonatal health in emergencies. Digital health technologies combined with community-based strategies and resilient medical facilities can greatly enhance emergency preparedness and survival outcomes for mothers and infants.
