Abstract

Background: The increasing use of digital communication platforms has exposed adolescents to new psychosocial challenges, including cyberbullying and online social isolation. These experiences have been linked to adverse behavioral health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, emotional distress, low self-esteem, and social withdrawal. As adolescents spend more time engaging in online environments, understanding the impact of cyberbullying and social isolation on behavioral health has become a significant public health concern.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between cyberbullying, online social isolation, and behavioral health outcomes among adolescents.

Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 360 adolescents aged 13–18 years from selected secondary schools. Data were collected using standardized cyberbullying exposure scales, online social isolation assessments, and behavioral health questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were employed to evaluate relationships among study variables.

Findings: Results indicated that 44% of participants reported experiencing cyberbullying, while 39% demonstrated high levels of online social isolation. Adolescents exposed to cyberbullying exhibited significantly higher behavioral distress scores (34.6 ± 7.2) compared with non-exposed adolescents (21.8 ± 5.9). Online social isolation was positively associated with behavioral health problems (r = 0.52, p < 0.001). Combined exposure to cyberbullying and social isolation significantly increased the likelihood of adverse behavioral outcomes.

Conclusion: Cyberbullying and online social isolation are significant predictors of negative behavioral health outcomes among adolescents. Implementing digital safety education, mental health support services, and positive online engagement programs may help reduce psychological distress and promote adolescent well-being.
