Abstract

Background: Digital technologies have become an integral part of adolescent life, providing opportunities for communication, education, entertainment, and social interaction. However, excessive and uncontrolled use of smartphones, social media platforms, online gaming, and internet-based applications has contributed to the emergence of digital addiction behaviors. Growing evidence suggests that digital addiction may negatively influence adolescent psychological health, emotional well-being, and social development.

Objective: To examine the prevalence of adolescent digital addiction behaviors and evaluate their consequences on psychological health development.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 adolescents aged 12–17 years from selected secondary schools. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires assessing digital addiction, screen time, social media engagement, emotional well-being, anxiety, depression symptoms, and psychological resilience. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to determine associations between digital addiction behaviors and psychological health outcomes.

Findings: The results revealed that 42% of participants demonstrated moderate-to-high levels of digital addiction. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were reported by 47% of adolescents with excessive digital use, compared with 21% among those with lower usage levels. Additionally, 64% of adolescents with balanced digital habits reported positive psychological well-being, whereas only 38% of digitally addicted participants demonstrated similar outcomes. Significant associations were observed between digital addiction behaviors and adverse psychological health indicators (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Adolescent digital addiction behaviors are significantly associated with poorer psychological health outcomes and reduced emotional well-being. Early intervention, digital literacy education, and healthy technology-use strategies may help minimize psychological risks and support positive adolescent development.
