Postpartum Depression And Associated Factors Among Jordanian Mothers In Royal Medical Services

Abstract

Background: Globally, PPD impacts approximately 10–20% of postpartum women, significantly affecting mothers and infants. Symptoms such as guilt, concentration difficulties, mood fluctuations, and sleep issues can hinder infant development. Key contributing factors include socio-demographic and health-related issues.

Objectives: this study aims to assess the prevalence PPD and identify associated factors that contribute to the development of PPD among Jordanian mothers.

Methodology: this is a cross-sectional study that will be conducted in the Royal Medical Services- Al-Hussein Hospital, recruiting 150 Jordanian mothers by systematic random sampling. Data regarding demographic variables, obstetric and pregnancy-related history, mental health history, and depressive symptoms in the postpartum period using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).

Results: results indicate a disparity in women's perceptions of their postpartum depression prevalence. Ten participants (7.6%) were unable to laugh or see the bright side of things, and 12 participants (8%) had difficulty finding enjoyment in things. Seven participants (4.7%) unnecessarily criticized themselves when things went wrong. Sixty-one participants (40.7%) were anxious and preoccupied for no apparent reason. there is an inverse correlation between level of family support and Prevalence of Postpartum Depression among Jordanian mothers. Also, there is a difference in Prevalence of Postpartum Depression among Jordanian mothers according to their characteristic (Age, number of children, Complications during the most recent pregnancy, the access to maternal and child healthcare services and Family history of postpartum depression)
