Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological profile of adolescents aged 10 to 19 years living in Recife-PE, reported as AIDS cases between 2007 and 2015. METHODS: Descriptive study with data from the official AIDS surveillance system. The selected variables were classified according to the epidemiological investigation records. RESULTS: A total of 84 cases were reported, with an average age of 17.4 years, 67% were of mixed race/skin color, and 45% were illiterate or had incomplete elementary education. The number of cases of the disease did not vary between sexes during the analyzed period, with an increase in cases among females from 2011 (5/1), declining after that year. The average incidence and mortality rates during the period were 6.2 and 0.4/100,000 inhabitants, respectively. CONCLUSION: Despite efforts to control the AIDS epidemic, there is a need to improve this population’s access to actions to prevent infection and control incidence.
