Abstract

Post-traumatic pneumonia (PTP) is a very common and severe complication of thoracic trauma. It is a significant risk factor for morbidity, mortality, hospital length of stay, admission to intensive care unit (ICU) and healthcare costs. Several preventive measures have been implemented to reduce the incidence of PTP, such as early mobilization, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, pain management, oxygen therapy, pulmonary hygiene, infection control and multidisciplinary care of the patient. This article contains a critical assessment of the effectiveness of such preventive interventions from the evidence presented in the thesis. The results have confirmed that preventive protocols are very effective, if they are applied in a regular and systematic way and are carried out by a multidisciplinary team. The use of early assessment, ongoing respiratory monitoring and standardized clinical guidelines, along with effective collaboration between healthcare professionals, can greatly decrease the prevalence of pneumonia and enhance patient outcomes.
