Background: The increasing prevalence of diabetes in both developed and developing countries have challenged scientists to the discovery of various therapeutic agents that can be used to ensure efficient treatment and management of diabetes. Synthetic anti-diabetic drugs are widely used for the management of diabetes mellitus; but they possess several limitations that may reduce their long-term effectiveness and patient compliance.
Objective: To provide natural and cost-effective alternative for synthetic antidiabetic drugs by exploring the synergistic effect of herbs in diabetes treatment and management.
Methods: Polyherbal formulations (F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5) containing powder of Moringa oleifera and Carica papaya leaves were prepared and evaluated for physicochemical properties and in vivo antidiabetic activity.
Results: All formulations showed acceptable characteristics. Formulation F3 exhibited the best physicochemical properties, stability, and antidiabetic activity.
Conclusion: The optimized polyherbal formulation (F3) demonstrated effective antidiabetic activity and may serve as a safe and natural alternative for managing diabetes mellitus.
