The present study was undertaken to evaluate the hepatoprotective potential of ethanolic fruit extract of Sesbania grandiflora against thioacetamide (TAA)-induced chronic hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats. Animals were divided into five groups comprising normal control, TAA control, low-dose extract, high-dose extract and standard silymarin-treated groups. Hepatoprotective activity was assessed by evaluating serum biochemical parameters, including ALT, AST, ALP, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, total protein and albumin. Oxidative stress parameters and histopathological changes were also considered for assessment of hepatic injury and protection. TAA administration produced marked alterations in liver function parameters, whereas treatment with S. grandiflora fruit extract improved these changes in a dose-dependent manner. The high-dose extract showed greater protective activity and approached the response observed with silymarin. The findings suggest that S. grandiflora fruit extract possesses promising hepatoprotective potential and may serve as a natural source for further investigation in hepatic disorders.
