Abstract

Legal information resources constitute the documentary and digital foundation of legal education, research, professional practice, judicial decision-making and access to justice. The expansion of legislation, judicial decisions, administrative materials, regulatory instruments and legal scholarship has transformed legal research from a predominantly print-based activity into a complex information-retrieval process involving government portals, court repositories, institutional libraries, commercial databases and open-access platforms. This review examines the nature, scope, types, accessibility, evaluation and emerging trends of legal information resources in India. It distinguishes primary, secondary and tertiary resources and considers print, electronic, open-access and commercial resources. Particular attention is given to legislation, case law, court records, law reports, legal periodicals, commentaries, parliamentary and Law Commission materials, institutional repositories and online databases. Digitisation has improved speed and breadth of retrieval, but authority, authenticity, currency, interoperability, discoverability, cost, digital literacy and unequal access remain significant concerns. Artificial intelligence offers opportunities for classification, translation, summarisation and legal research assistance while creating risks of inaccurate or fabricated authorities. The paper argues that the future of legal information services depends on authoritative open access, interoperable systems, robust metadata, preservation standards, information-literacy education and responsible AI use. Law libraries and legal information professionals therefore remain essential as evaluators, curators, educators and facilitators of reliable legal knowledge.
