Abstract

Background: Ayurveda is regarded as an old system of holistic medicine that acknowledges the complex interaction of the mind, body and soul. The recent increase in lifestyle-associated diseases and the resulting growth in the popularity of traditional medicine are factors contributing to its rise to prominence. At the same time, there are numerous challenges in adapting Ayurveda to diverse geographical, institutional and policy realities while retaining its integrity as a medical system.

Objective: This comprehensive review provides an exhaustive, rigorous appraisal of the current status, historical trajectories, and global structural integration of Ayurveda across diverse international regulatory jurisdictions, combining classical doctrines with modern

biomedical framework

Methods: This article was based on a comprehensive search of scholarly databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as reports and policy papers published by the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of AYUSH, India. The findings of multiple peer-reviewed articles, historical medical resources, and research reports on the safety of clinical procedures and international regulatory practices were analysed. Particular attention was paid to the existing dichotomy in medical practice and policies in India and the countries of the European Economic Area, as well as the recent changes in the WHO’s ICD-11 databases

Results: The study revealed that the integration of Ayurvedic practices into the regular healthcare system is a multifaceted process that requires years of collaboration between policymakers and medical professionals. On the one hand, India has a highly organised and standardised approach to the promotion and development of traditional medicine based on the Ministry of AYUSH’s strategic guidelines. On the other hand, the status of Ayurveda in Europe and the US is mostly defined by its perception as an alternative mode of treatment. The recent update of the WHO’s ICD-11 database included several entries regarding traditional medicines, which can benefit the integration of Ayurveda into the mainstream healthcare system on a global scale. Nevertheless, the expansion of the market for herbal cosmetics and medicines indicates the need to balance clinical studies and the growing consumer demand.

Discussion: Integrating traditional systems into modern global health requires overcoming Substantial epistemological clashes between multi-herb synergistic pharmacology and Reductionist biomedical trial designs. Furthermore, advanced Kaya Chikitsa clinical Protocols, pharmacokinetics, strict quality control, pharmacovigilance, and global Standardization are paramount

Conclusion: In order to address the challenges of treating lifestyle-associated diseases on a global scale, traditional medicine practices such as Ayurveda should be carefully integrated into the existing healthcare systems. A pragmatic approach to the harmonisation of scientific evidence and regulatory policies will benefit years of collaboration between medical institutions in different countries
