Abstract

Blockchain technology has emerged as a potential enabler of business transformation through distributed recordkeeping, cryptographic verification, programmable transactions, and decentralized coordination. Its applications extend beyond cryptocurrencies to supply chain management, financial services, digital identity, intellectual property, healthcare, and interorganizational data exchange. Despite growing interest, the business value of blockchain remains contingent on technological suitability, organizational readiness, stakeholder participation, governance arrangements, and regulatory conditions. This paper develops a conceptual framework for understanding how blockchain can influence business performance and organizational transformation. Drawing on distributed ledger research, technology adoption theory, transaction cost economics, and the resource-based view, the paper examines five mechanisms through which blockchain may create business value: transaction transparency, process automation, data integrity, interorganizational coordination, and the development of new business models. It also identifies major implementation challenges, including scalability, interoperability, privacy, regulatory uncertainty, integration costs, energy consumption, and resistance to organizational change. The proposed framework connects technological characteristics and organizational capabilities with implementation quality and business outcomes. Seven research propositions are formulated to guide future empirical investigation. The paper contributes to the conceptual literature by emphasizing that blockchain should be evaluated as an organizational and interorganizational innovation rather than as a standalone technical solution. Managerial implications are developed for strategic investment, governance, ecosystem coordination, and responsible implementation. The paper concludes that blockchain’s future business impact will depend less on adoption for its own sake and more on its ability to address identifiable coordination problems, produce measurable value, and operate within appropriate legal, technological, and institutional frameworks.
