Abstract

Background: Surgical recovery is a multidimensional process involving physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Patients undergoing surgical procedures frequently experience anxiety, fear, uncertainty, pain-related distress, sleep disturbances, and emotional vulnerability. These psychological factors may influence postoperative recovery, treatment adherence, rehabilitation participation, and overall patient satisfaction. Mental health nursing interventions offer an important approach to addressing these challenges through comprehensive psychological support and individualized nursing care.

Objective: To examine the role of mental health nursing interventions in enhancing surgical patient recovery across adult, obstetric and gynecological, and pediatric surgical care settings.

Methodology: This paper adopts a narrative review approach to examine the role of psychological assessment, therapeutic communication, relaxation techniques, preoperative counseling, postoperative emotional support, and family-centered nursing interventions in surgical recovery. Relevant concepts from perioperative nursing, psychiatric nursing, psychological care, and patient-centered healthcare are synthesized to develop a comprehensive framework for clinical nursing practice.

Results: The reviewed concepts indicate that integrating mental health nursing into perioperative care may help reduce psychological distress, improve coping abilities, support pain management, enhance treatment participation, and strengthen patient and family satisfaction. Population-specific interventions are particularly important because adults, women undergoing obstetric and gynecological surgery, and children experience different psychological and emotional challenges.

Conclusion: Mental health nursing interventions should be integrated into routine surgical care to promote holistic recovery. A coordinated approach involving psychological assessment, therapeutic communication, individualized interventions, and family participation may strengthen the quality of surgical nursing services.
