Abstract

Objective: To analyze the quality of life among adolescent cancer survivors treated at a hospital in Recife. Methods:
Exploratory descriptive study, with a multidisciplinary qualitative approach, using the personal medical histories recounted
by these patients as a methodological strategy. Information was collected at the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital in Recife,
Northeast Brazil, through social, economic and demographic datasheets completed by twelve adolescents treated at the
oncology out-patient clinic, in addition to oral history interviews with a leading question. The information on these forms
underwent descriptive quantitative analysis, with discourse analysis for the interviews. Results: The quality of life among
cancer survivors is affected by several aspects, including physical, social or psychological factors. The points identifi ed in
this study that intervened in the quality of life of these adolescents include prejudice and the sequelae of cancer treatments.
Conclusion: Cancer and its treatment have many consequences for these adolescents, infl uencing their quality of life. The
aspects noted during the study were related mainly to social, economic and cultural issues, due to the stigma of this disease
in our society, even after remission
