Objective: To identify knowledge and practices among teen mothers related to pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases
and pap smears, while also developing a group approach at the Casa da Mamãe shelter, so that young mothers can learn
more easily how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS, in addition to contraceptive methods that help
prevent another unplanned pregnancy. Methods: An exploratory descriptive survey was conducted through a qualitative
approach, in order to discover how much teen mothers know about sexual health. To do so, the data collection tool used
consisted of interviews with these teen mothers. The subjects of this survey consisted of eight teenage mothers staying in
the Casa da Mamãe shelter at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, Sobral hospital in Ceará State, Brazil. Results: These new
mothers were able to express their knowledge, doubts, fears and insecurities about pregnancy, STDs, AIDS and their pre
vention, as well as contraceptive methods. Conclusion: through this survey, it became clear that the level of information
on sexual health among young mothers staying at the Casa da Mamãe shelter is insufficient in terms of their real needs.
