Abstract

Objective: To explore the use of condoms among male adolescents as they become sexually active. Methods: This descrip
tive exploratory study collected data through a questionnaire completed by 166 male adolescents at a government school
in the city of São Paulo, SP, Brazil. Results: Among the students, 93.4% know about the male condom and 69.8% consider
its use important. Sexual initiation (intercourse) had occurred for 69.3% of the adolescents by 13.4 years old, with 40.4% of
them wearing a condom for their first intercourse and 31.3% during subsequent intercourse. Conclusion: the adolescents
addressed by this study are exposed to unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, highlighting the need to
enhance their awareness of the risks of unprotected sex.
