Objective: Prompted by an uptrend in anorexia nervosa among male adolescents, this paper reviews the literature in
order to understand aspects implicit in this situation. data source: survey of scientific literature on health (Scientific
Electronic Library Online [SciELO], Medical Literature Analysis [MEDLINE] and ADOLEC [Virtual Health Library – www.
adolec.org]) using the following keywords: "anorexia nervosa", "adolescent medicine", "adolescent health", "adolescent
behavior", "nutrition" and "eating disorders". data summary: Papers published between 1980 and 2011 were selected,
and the most relevant were examined. Many risk factors are involved in determining the etiology of anorexia nervosa in
men and the therapeutic approach is complex and multidisciplinary.. Conclusion: Although still rare, anorexia is on the
rise among boys and must always be considered as a possibility by healthcare practitioners caring for adolescents with
severe malnutrition, as early detection and treatment are crucial for its prognosis, thus avoiding delayed diagnoses and
more severe progression of the disease.
