Objective: This paper presents some issues related to the physiology of the sleep-wake cycle and its implications for the
daily lives of adolescents, in an attempt to encourage professionals to reflect on important aspects related to regular
sleep quality and quantity. data source and synthesis: Sleep is a physiological condition characterized by a reversible
behavioral state, with changes in awareness levels and responsiveness to stimuli, playing a vital role in terms of electro
physiological, neurochemical, anatomical and functional alterations to the brain. It is controlled by chronobiological and
homeostatic mechanisms and closely related to periods of wakefulness. One of the most immediate results of poor sleep
quality is a drop in performance the next day, with adverse effects during wakefulness, such as drowsiness, mood swings,
anxiety, low self-esteem, sluggish thought, memory loss, poor classroom performance and becoming more accident
prone. Conclusion: Sleep plays an important role in the physical and emotional development of adolescents, as they pass
through this period of intensive learning and differentiation. Paradoxically, however, several factors now contribute to a
lack of sleep among teenagers, particularly social pressures that extend their activities, such as excessive computer and
phone use, new affective relationships, parties, etc. All these factors curtail the duration of nighttime sleep, resulting in
daytime drowsiness.
