Abstract

Objective: The textbook is a vital tool in the teaching and learning process; from this standpoint, the objective of this study
was to analyse science textbooks used in the 8th grade of elementary school in terms of aspects related to human sexuality.
Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study focusing human sexuality in science textbooks adopted in public institutions
for the 8th elementary grade in three municipalities in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Results: It was observed that “hu
man sexuality” was not satisfactorily treated neglecting some aspects of great relevance, especialy those related to gender
and sexual orientation. Education is the most powerful weapon that society can wield in order to combat the ills afflicting
teenagers. They must be given correct information about sexuality. Conclusion: It is expected that the authors should
review the scope afforded to sexuality in their works, which are certainly crucial tools for raising new citizens.
