Objetive: To evaluate the nurses’ knowledge against growth and development of adolescents. Methods: A
descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative approach study conducted among nurses from the Family Health
Strategy in a municipality in southern Minas gerais State, approved by the UNiFENAS Ethics Committee under
protocol 256/09. The sample consisted of thirteen nurses linked to all ESFs in the municipality where the study was
conducted during the data collection year (2010). A semi-structured questionnaire with fi fteen questions wasused to collect the data, which were then tabulated by calculating the frequencies: absolute and percentage.
Results: it was noted that 77% of the subjects were unable to list the correct sequence of physical changes that occur in
boys during adolescence and 62% were unaware of the alterations experienced by girls. The Tanner scale was mentioned
by 23.09% of the respondents as an adolescent maturation evaluation tool, while 7.69% mentioned the Line guide, 15.38%
mentioned Anthropometric Evaluation / BMi and 53.84% did not answer. The service most offered to adolescents by
the ESF is the guidance group (43%), and the main diffi culty of working with teenagers is that they do not adhere to
the programs offered (54%). Conclusion: There is a barrier associated to the nurses’ knowledge against growth and
development of adolescents and the lack of proper care to this group by healthcare services is related to their little
adherence to the activities developed.
