Abstract

Introduction: This project was conducted at the out-patient clinic of the Adolescent Health Studies Center (NESA) dental
Sector, in order to update knowledge about the prevention and treatment of carious lesions through chewing gum − a
habit that is very common among teenagers. Objective: To provide information on this habit, as well as guidelines and
precautions to be taken. Data source and synthesis: A questionnaire explored the use of chewing gum and knowledge,
with a survey of the literature. Conclusion: chewing gum with specifi c characteristics is a new caries prevention tool.
