Health education in adolescence: an academic experiment in the Family Health Strategy

Objective: This paper describes an experiment in health education for adolescents coordinated by the professor and
students graduating from the nursing course during the Collective Health Curricular Traineeship at a Family Health Strategy
unit. Case description: twelve educational groups were held each month during 2010 with an average attendance of
15.7 youngsters at each event and a total of 123 adolescents for the period. The topics addressed were selected by the
participants as priorities: physical and psychological changes during puberty; relationships such as dating, going steady
and sexual initiation; contraception and prevention of unwanted pregnancy and STds; drug use; violence; and life projects.
Comments: This project created a space for thoughtful exchanges of knowledge, strengthening the bonds of trust between
these youngsters, the clinic and its staff, thus paving the way for more solid activities focused on this population.
