Keywords:
Abortion, adolescent, pregnancyAbstract
Objective: To observe progress during the fi ve years since this law came into effect. Methods: The authors present a
descriptive retrospective study of Voluntary Terminations of Pregnancy (VTPs) at the obstetrics department, Centro
Hospitalar Alto Ave. Results: In Portugal, about 64.7% of all reasons for VTPs occur among women between 20 and 34
years old, with the 15-19 years old group accounting for 11.28%. There were 100 abortions among adolescents under 18
years old (13-18 years old) at this hospital during a fi ve-year period. The average recorded age was between 17 and 18 years
old, 0.6% below 15 years old and 71% between 17 and 18 years old. Conclusion: Similar to other Portuguese studies, the
data in this study also indicate a low percentage of VTPs among girls under 15 years of age, with prevalence in the 17-18
years old group. In terms of educational levels, the data also overlapped, with a higher rate of VTPs at secondary schools.
