Objective: To evaluate knowledge among adolescents of the physical and psychological changes that occur during this
stage. Methods: A descriptive quantitative study was conducted at a government teaching institution in a town in southern
Minas gerais State, approved by the UNiFENAS Ethics Committee under opinion Nº 113/2011. The sample consisted of
100 adolescents between 12 and 14 years old. The data were collected through a questionnaire with structured and
semi-structured questions. The collected data were analyzed by an appropriate program and expressed in percentages.
Results: There was a prevalence of females (53%) over males (47%) with girls being clearly more knowledgeable about
the changes that occur among females (40%) and males (15%) during puberty. Among the main psychic alterations,
feelings of sadness and happiness were mentioned by most of the respondents (82%). For girls, menstruation was the
most disturbing phenomenon (34%). Medical practitioners were rated as the most appropriate providers of advice on this matter (37%), with 18% mentioning nurses as sources of information. Conclusion: The level of knowledge among
adolescents about the physical and psychological changes that occur during this stage was poor, with nurses mentioned
by only a few subjects as a major source of guidance.
