Objective: To analyze the profi le of adolescents assisted in an outpatient clinic specialized in adolescent medicine.
Methods: Longitudinal retrospective study of the medical records of adolescents, assisted in the outpatient clinic of
adolescent medicine of a Basic Health Unit from 2011/January to 2012/September. The records were classifi ed by clinical
laboratory diagnosis. Results: 1077 medical records were analyzed, of which 606 (56.3%) were female and 471 (43.7%)
were male. The most frequent diagnosis in girls were: routine visit/"normal adolescence syndrome": 106 cases (17.5%),
upper respiratory tract infection: 48 cases (7.9%), headache/migraine: 33 cases (5.4%), dysmenorrhea: 31 cases (5.1%),
dyspepsia: 30 casos (4.9%), other diagnosis: 358 cases (59.9%). In boys: routine visit/"normal adolescence syndrome": 91
cases (19.3%), upper respiratory tract infection: 51 cases (10.8%); headache/migraine: 21 cases (4.5%); allergic rhinitis: 18
cases (3.8%); obesity: 16 cases (3.4%) and other diagnosis: 274 cases (58.1%). Conclusion: the main reason for the visit
was routine/"normal adolescence syndrome" in both, boys and girls. The most common disease in girls and boys was upper
respiratory tract infection and migraine was common in both sexes. Most of the health problems that occur in adolescence
can be treated by the pediatrician, since he presents basic knowledge about puberty and psychosocial aspects of this age
group and mainly interest, sensitivity and ability to deal with young people.
