Asthma in adolescence: aspects addressed in qualitative research

Abstract

Objective: Present, from a theoretical review article, the main aspects in articles originated from qualitative research
studies addressing asthma in adolescence. Data Sources: a narrative revision was held with publications produced from
qualitative researches on asthma in adolescence. For its excellence in scientifi c quality in healthcare and international scope,
Medline was used. This database was accessed through the Virtual Health Library (VHL) for the period specifi ed between
the years 1997 and 2011. To search the publications the keywords: "asthma", "adolescent" and "qualitative" were used. Data
Synthesis: The results showed that the subjects covered the beliefs, practices, medication use and management of asthma
by adolescents and their families as well as the relationship between the healthcare professional with the patient and family
and the use of health services by them. Conclusion: Finding only international articles for this review, evidenced the need
for more qualitative studies, especially the Brazilians, that value the characteristics of this phase of life for better treatment
engagement among adolescents with asthma.
