Educational approach using the Paulo Freire´s Culture Circles: experience of nursing students in the “Group Adolescer”

Objective: Report the experience of nursing students from educational approaches with the "Group Adolescer" using the
Paulo Freire´s Culture Circles. Case description: The experiment occurred in October 2012, with nursing students from
the State University Vale do Acaraú (UVA), Sobral – CE, Brazil and adolescents from school “Padre Osvaldo Chaves” of
“Dom Expedito” district, Sobral – CE, Brazil, who are part of the "Group Adolescer", facilitated by health professionals.The
school operates in the Family Health Center at the same location. Three meetings were held, planned based on the Paulo
Freire´s Culture Circles, with observing participation and fi eld diary. The teenagers participated of the three weekly meetings
during their classes free time, on Fridays, at 1 pm, assisted by school professionals. Initially, to get to know the group,
there was a prior contact with a conversation with them, to discover their vocabulary universe. In the other two meetings,
words extracted from their universe vocabulary were used to foster discussion, as well as practices of dynamic and problem
situations. The words chosen were related to sexual and reproductive health. In the discussion of problem situations about
teenage pregnancy, the teens reported that they know teenagers who were or are pregnant. All the teenagers reported that
the lack of discussion with parents and non-use of contraceptive methods may be the main cause of an unwanted pregnancy.
Comments: Living through this work brought up experiences in teaching and research, providing involvement with the
group and professionals from other areas, thus contributing to interdisciplinary training and performance in nursing.
