Prevention of psychoactive substance use among schoolchildren: an experiment with recreational activities

Objective: Report on the experience of nursing students demonstrating the importance of preventive actions focused on the
use of psychoactive substances. Methods: The setting for this survey was a municipal government school in Vitoria, Espírito
Santo State, conducted through groups in the Connecting Knowledge and Preventing the Use of Psychoactive Substances:
Dialog with the Community Project, established in 2010 and implemented as one of the main activities of the Centre for
Studies and Research on Alcohol and Other Drugs (CEPAD) (Protocol N° 051/11 - CEP-UFES). This project reached out to
youngsters between 11 and 16 years old, addressing issues such as drugs, self-esteem, vulnerability and youth protagonism. Results: Recreational activities were organized on interdisciplinary bases during eight meetings, including workshops,
debates and dynamics designed to provide information, encouraging discussion and refl ection on issues related to alcohol
and other drugs, in addition to enhancing awareness of the importance of taking control over their own lives. Conclusion:
This project allowed undergraduate nursing students to engage in preventative health activities, fostering interactions
between the university and grassroots communities.
