Adolescence as the subject time in psychoanalysis

Abstract

Objective: This paper presents a brief overview of adolescence as understood in psychoanalysis, assuming that these
youngsters are surrounded by a society that has the youth as its ideal, while failing to appreciate the diffi culties they face
at this stage in their lives, characterized by Freud and Lacan as a complex period, mourning the parents of their childhood
and the child's body while coping with the reality of sex. Methods: This review of the literature surveys some classic
psychoanalytic authors, such as Freud, Lacan and other contemporaries. Results: The high value placed on adolescence
by the media and the lack of adult models and examples can make this period even more confusing. Conclusion: In
psychoanalysis, the subject’s truth emerges through words and extends beyond discourse. Adolescent choices during this
stage are steered by many concepts of interest that offer clues for thinking about adolescence.
