Abstract

Objective: Refl ections on the position of preserving their virginity longer by choice among adolescents and how this is
presented in their imagination and in society, through a review of the literature. Data Sources: A search of the Scientifi c
Electronic Library Online (SciELO) database was conducted, using the key words: "teenager", "sexual abstinence", "teen
health" and “human health". Through the Foucaultian Discourse Analysis research method, the meanings of sexuality
can be identifi ed from patterns within broader social or cultural contexts. Data Synthesis: Studies of this subject are
underexplored, with fi rst-time sexual intercourse for males being so important in our society that not having this experience
within a specifi c period causes embarrassment for teenagers, although many of them say that they would like to wait longer,
as well as choosing partners for sharing this experience. Conclusion: Dialog and listening to young people is of paramount
importance for deconstructing the representation of what "being a man" means in our society.
