Abstract

This study aims to analyze the clinical, obstetric and neonatal implications of biological risks of pregnancy among
adolescents under 16 years of age through a systematic review of 28 articles. The search strategy was performed by key
words of MeSH and DECS (in English) merging the words “teenage pregnancy” and “obstetric, clinical and neonatal risk
factors”. Boolean operators were used specifi cally for PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and EMBASE. The complications most
frequently noted were: small for gestational age (75%), with low birth weight (64%) premature birth (61%) delayed
intrauterine growth (66%), anemia (55%), postpartum hemorrhage (33%), vaginal delivery (31%) and urinary tract
infection and/or vaginal (29%). These fi ndings suggest that the biological characteristics of adolescents <16 years of age
increase the risk of adverse events during pregnancy.
