Prevalence of sexual practices of school teens in Recife and metropolitan region in the years 2006 and 2011

Objective: To verify the prevalence of sexual practices of adolescent students using a comparative study in 2006 and 2011.
Methods: It is a descriptive-quantitative study, by means of a school survey covering the State of Pernambuco, Brazil in
2006 and 2011. In 2006, 6031 students were interviewed in 76 public schools; in 2011, 85 schools were visited in 48 cities
in Pernambuco and 7,195 students interviewed. This study is a product of the Master’s thesis entitled: School Adolescent's
Sexual risk practices: a comparative study between the years 2006 and 2011. Results: It was shown that among adolescent
students in the years 2006 and 2011 the female presence was more evident (61.8 % and 58.2 %), presenting a higher percentage those with more than 17 years, 59.2 % (2006) and 51.3 % (2011). Nearly half of the adolescent students were already sexually active, 49.7% (2006) and 47% (2011). Conclusion: The sexual practices of teenagers are beginning earlier, with more partners, and without appropriate care to safe sex practice. The women's active participation in sexual practices
was also evident in the study.
