Dental plaque index and socioeconomic condition of children and teenagers victims of sexual violence

Objective: Verify the dental plaque index and the socioeconomic status of children and teenagers victims of sexual violence,
showing the importance of integrating dental assistance in programs against this type of violence. Methods: A cross-sectional
study was conducted with 69 children and teenagers aged from 0 to 18 years, which were enrolled in the Program to Combat
Sexual Violence against Children and Adolescents, Belem/PA. To evaluate the dental plaque index, a clinical examination was
performed with plaque disclosing agents and the result was registered in a standard form. A socio-economic assessment was
conducted through interviews with data collection based on the Brazil Economic Classifi cation of the Brazilian Association
of Research Companies. Results: The research showed that: 81.2% of victims were female, 33.3% were teenagers, the
oral condition of the victims was compromised by dental plaque index considered "too high" and the most prevalen socioeconomic classes were the lowest (C2 e D). Conclusion: The high rate of plaque is related to low socioeconomic status,
and the association of these conditions with the sequel of violence may further aggravate the oral health of children and
teenagers. Therefore, it is essential to implement dental assistance programs do confront sexual violence
