Objective: Recent evidence indicates that hypertension is increasing its incidence among adolescents. This work was
intended to correlate body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with high blood pressure in adolescents from
a school in Curitiba-PR. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted from September to November 2012; the total sample consisted of 118 adolescents, the values found were classifi ed in the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics'
(BSP) tables of age percentiles by BMI, WC and blood pressure (BP). All participants had term of consent signed by parents
or guardians. The study was approved by the Ethics and Research Department of the Universidade Positivo in Curitiba.
Results: The mean age found was 13.4 years. The BMI ranged from 13.6 to 46.5 kg / m², and the males had higher rates of
overweight and obesity (p=0.03). 16.1% had blood pressure measurements increased, and systolic BP was responsible for
most of the percentiles above 95. There was a highly signifi cant correlation (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study showed a
signifi cant association between the studied items and increased BP in adolescents, which suggest that the sedentary lifestyle
and poor eating habits of most adolescents be listed as possible risk factors.
