Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the association of breakfast with sociodemographic characteristics, with other feeding behaviors
and with consumption of nutrients. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, school-based, part of “Study of Cardiovascular
Risks in Adolescents - ERICA”. Data on socioeconomic status, eating behavior, and physical activity were collected using a
self-administered questionnaire. Feeding consumption was assessed by a 24-hour dietary recall. Ordinal logistic regression
models were fi tted to investigate if the frequency of breakfast consumption is associated with the characteristics of interest.
The average consumption of nutrients according to the categories of breakfast were compared using the analysis of
variance. Results: 943 adolescents were evaluated and 18.9% of them never eat breakfast. The adolescents who referred
consumption of breakfast, also mentioned having meals with their parents more frequently. (OR: 1.66 and CI: 1.01 to 2.73). The habit of eating breakfast is more frequent in males (OR: 2.44 and CI: 1.67 to 3.55) and among younger adolescents
(OR: 0.91 and CI: 0.84 to 0.98). The association with sex was only observed in physically active individuals. Teens who eat
breakfast consume more energy, fi ber and several micronutrients. Conclusion: Teenagers who eat breakfast are younger
males and have meals with their parents / guardians more frequently
