Knowledge and attitudes of adolescents about the Pap smear and human papillomavirus

Objective: The aim was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of Pap smear and human papillomavirus in adolescent
women. Methods: An observational and descriptive study was conducted in a public school in Santo Ângelo city, with 40
adolescents 14-19 years of age. Results: The average age of fi rst sexual intercourse was 14.8 years old, the majority (52.5%)
had already heard about the Pap smear, but did not know its purpose and frequency, with low adherence (25%) to the
exam. As for the human papillomavirus, 52.5% of the adolescents had heard of it, however the majority (62.5%) did not
know the relationship between virus and cervical cancer. Conclusion: We emphasize the importance of education in health,
in need of more guidance and initiatives in terms of health policy, such as awareness campaigns on prevention of cervical
cancer and disclosure of Pap smear exam.
