Sexual offender of children and adolescents: analysis of situations related to rape and victims
Keywords:
Sexual violence, adolescent, child abuse, sexual.Abstract
Objective: To trace the typology of sexual offenders who abuse children and adolescents and possible associations between
characteristics of violation and victims. Methods: An exploratory cross-sectional study based on the offi cial documents
“Reports of Police Investigations, Reports of Occurrence, and Terms of Circumstances” of the Civil and Specialized
Police stations of Feira de Santana, Bahia, from 2005-2010. Analyses were conducted using the prevalence ratio (PR) and
confi dence intervals (CI) to determine the association between variables. The Pearson’s Chi-square test was used as a
measure of statistical signifi cance, with =5%. Results: Among the registered offenders, the majority were male (98.0%),
single (61.3%). 43,6% of offenders were adults (25-49 years old), 18,8% were adolescents and 22% were young adults
(20-24 years old); nearly 69,9% were in the victim’s circle of friends, or a family member, neighbor, community member,
friend, boyfriend or colleague; 16.5% were the father or stepfather of the victim and 10.5% were other relatives. In 72.3%
of events, the violence occurred in the extra-familiar context; with physical contact (88.3%); penetration (66.7%) and
concomitant physical aggression (42.9%). The reoccurrence of abuse happened in 41.8% of cases, and in 86.4% of cases it
was perpetrated by a single person. Signifi cant associations were observed between the adolescent offender and a violent
event in the extra-familiar context, with penetration, aggression, and physical intimidation/threats. Male victims were more
commonly molested by adolescent offenders who were known to the victim, single, and with the participation of multiple
perpetrators. Conclusion: The high participation of adolescents and youth as perpetrators, the elevated prevalence of sexual
abuse in the extra-familiar context, involving penetration and physical violence, in addition to the expressive participation
of offenders within the social circle of the victims, suggest the need of action from various social sectors to interrupt the
cycle of victimization-aggression and contribute to the prevention of the intergenerational transmission of violence.
