Objective: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with syphilis among teenagers in the age group between 11
18 years, of both sexes and pregnant women, registered in the Testing and Counseling Center / CTA Municipal Reference
Center/CRM Feira de Santana, Bahia / Brazil. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional cohort study, developed
from the review of 33.665 records of service on the CTA Information System, for the period 2003 to 2012. 3.482 records
of patients with results from Venereal Disease Research Laboratory-VDRL reagent were evaluated and the association with
sociodemographic and clinical and behavioral characteristics were investigated. Results: Between 2003 and 2012, the
prevalence of syphilis was 0.86% and 1.95% (13) for males, 1.18% (14) for females and 0.18% among adolescent pregnant
women. Conclusion: In the group of non-pregnant women, it was observed HIV-syphilis coinfection, besides association
between the use of drugs and alcohol. In non-pregnant women the association between syphilis the use of drugs/alcohol
and HIV coinfection was observed. These fi ndings point to the need for measures to prevent syphilis infection, especially in
vulnerable situations, such as drug use and HIV.
