Violence against children and adolescents: incidence at the beginning and the end of a decade

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this article is to analyze the incidence of violence against children and adolescents registered
by the Guardianship Councils and Social Work Center (CREAS), in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brasil, in 2003 and in 2009.
Methods: Coeffi cients of the incidences of violence were calculated as per age and sex of the victims. Results: Neglect and
physical violence were the most registered occurrences, mainly through anonymous reporting. Between 2003 and 2009,
an increase of the coeffi cients and changes in the patterns of the curves were observed: neglect maintained high indexes in
childhood; physical violence prevailed between 5 and 8 years; psychological abuse increased at 6 and 14 years and sexua violence raised the coeffi cients between 12 and 15 years. The incidence differed between sexes indicating higher risk for
males during childhood and for females, during adolescence. Conclusion: The coeffi cients between the years studied point
to increased violent incidents and suggest higher popular participation in the complaints
