Parent-Adolescents Relationships and the Development of Social Competence: A literature review

Objective: Our goals are (a) to provide an overview of the broad construct of social competence; (b) to present how
relationships between parents and adolescents were considered to infl uence social development, emphasizing the role
of parent–teen interactions and reciprocity as a mechanism through which adolescents learn to navigate in their social
world; (c) to comment on the limits of current research knowledge and areas of future investigation; and (d) to discuss
the implications of parent-adolescent relationships in the development of effective prevention and intervention strategies.
Methods: In this paper we review theoretical and empirical advances in research on the role of parent–teen relationships
in shaping adolescents' development of interpersonal and social skills. Conclusion: The key to fostering healthy adolescent
development is to not only understand the individual development, but also the interactive dynamics that exists between
the adolescents, their parents and their community
