Abstract

Objective: This study investigated stress conditions in a group of adolescents living in shelters, in terms of the areas most
commonly mentioned as stressful events and perceived stress intensity. Methods: Thirty adolescents (both genders, 11
to 18 years-old) living in shelters in the Baixada Santista district (São Paulo, Brazil) were investigated, using the Stressing
Events Inventory for Adolescents (IEEA) and the Adolescent Stress Questionnaire (ASQ). Results: High-impact events and
stressors were related to school, fi nancial pressures and legal and institutional rules, in addition to concerns about poverty
and violence. Conclusion: Stress associated with school environments was identifi ed in the group of adolescents under
examination, with family relationships that have already been damaged signifi cantly, underscoring the need for broader
based investigations into this topic, in greater depth.
