Abstract

Objective: This study investigated behavioral risk factors among adolescents committing homicide. Methods: The
2014 – 2015 records of reform school detainees were analyzed by the following variables: age, gender, marital status,
education, drug and alcohol use, circumstances of the crime, social aspects and family context. Results: The results
consisted of the records of 28 male adolescents with a mean age of age of 17; poor education (82%); low economic and
social (89%) status; school dropouts (97%); socially vulnerable (78%); alcohol and drug use (75%); and other crimes in
the family (71%). Just over half (53%) of these homicides involved fi rearms, with 78% related to drug debts. Conclusion:
These risk factors must be taken into consideration during the rehabilitation of these youngsters, together with steps
designed to prevent repeat offences.
