Abstract

Objective: To explore the lifestyles of adolescent pupils at a government school in Porto Velho, Roraima State. Methods:
This descriptive study addresses a population of 318 teenage boys and girls between 14 and 19 years old attending a
State-run high school in Rio Branco. Using the convenience sampling technique with a 95% confi dence interval and a
5% sampling error, the original total of 177 pupils fell by 67 through losses and refusals, resulting in a fi nal sample of 110
adolescents. The following questionnaires were administered: Lifestyle Profi le, IPAQ short version and ABEP. The variables
used were: gender, age, classroom shift, social class and level of physical activity. The statistical analysis was run through
the SPSS version 17.0, using the chi-square test, with retrospective descriptive analysis of the incidence rate using the Odds
Ratio (OR), with a p-value of 5%. Results: The nutrition and physical activity components were signifi cant (p = 0.02), with
the physical activity component associated signifi cantly with the gender and social class variables. Boys performed better
overall for every lifestyle component. Conclusion: The nutrition component was associated with satisfactory performance among active youngsters; the physical activity component was associated with active high and middle class boys. No
associations were noted for the other lifestyle components.
