Family structure of an Adolescent with depression treated at the Children's Psychological Rehabilitation Center and Youth of Maputo – Mozambique

Objective: Describe the functioning of a teenager´s family structure diagnosed with depression, treated at the Centro de
Reabilitação Psicológica Infantil at the Central Hospital of Maputo. Methods: A qualitative research of a case study. The
instruments used were a genogram, Beck depression Inventory, Family System Test (FAST) and a structured interview.
Results: The results revealed the existence of low cohesion and high hierarchy, related to the unfunctional family structure.
The Beck inventory confi rmed the depression diagnosis made by the hospital. The family genogram and the interview
with the teenager provided contents about the confl icts and diffi culties experienced in the family. The results point to a poor intrafamiliar communication bringing forth a lot of stress, misunderstandings, causing depressive symptoms on
the teenager. Conclusion: The study brings up the need of a refl ection from the health professionals, educators and the
community in general about considering the family as part of the problem, providing opportunities to develop a sector to
give orientation and care to the youth and its family about depression disorders.
