Changes in family and social relationships of adolescents and youngsters after pregnancy

Objective: Analyze the reasons cited by adolescents and young mothers for changes in their family and social relationships
two years postpartum. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 464 young women from 15-22 years residing in Teresina-PI
two years after fi nalizing a pregnancy at four municipal maternities. The. univariate analysis was performed using descriptive
statistics. Results: Among the young women who observed changes in marital and family relationships, the majority
reported that they were mostly positive, as the companion became more helpful (34.3%), the father (64.1%) and the
mother (78.1 %) became closer. The alienation from friends (63.4%) leaded a signifi cant portion of respondents to observe
negative changes in friendships. Conclusion: Given the importance of social and emotional support to young women who
have experienced a pregnancy, it is suggested that health professionals develop strategies to encourage an increase of bond
between the young women and the people around her, both during and after the pregnancy, in order to contribute to the
reduction of negative social and psychological impacts that affect single mothers support network.
